LAS
VEGAS -- That loud laughter you hear
in the background comes from
promoter Bob Arum and Jose Luis
Castillo.
They were accused of being
unprofessional and a lot worse when
Castillo failed to make the weight
to fight Diego "Chico" Corrales but
now it is Corrales who is the
overweight and suddenly stripped
world champion. |
 |
|
On his first attempt at the weigh-in
here for his title defense against
old rival Joel Casamayor, Corrales
was an incredible FIVE pounds
overweight. He came back to the
official scales a second time,
having lost a half-pound to 139.5
and was given two more hours to lose
two more pounds.
The fight with Casamayor is going on
but Corrales is stripped of the WBC
lightweight crown due to the failure
to make the weight limit. There will
be a Saturday weigh-in at which
neither fighter can weigh more than
147 pounds.
So what happens now? Should Corrales
win the fight, the WBC title remains
vacant. Should Casamayor win, he
becomes the WBC 135-pound king. And
should Casamayor lose the bout, he
will still be entitled to an
immediate title bout match against
WBC interim lightweight champion
David Diaz.

Remember where ya
Ron Heard this
first! From the
official NSAC scales
themselves!
Corrales is hit hard
in the pocket also.
The Nevada
commission has hit
him with a $240,000
fine, half of which
will be paid
directly to
Casamayor.
And there has been a
private agreement
made between the
camps with Corrales
making a payment to
Casamayor so the
would-be challenger
goes through with
the bout anyway. |
|
|
Corrales trainer Joe Goossen
said Corrales was literally
starving himself to make the
weight but was unable to do
so.
In a classy move, Corrales
gripped Casamayor's hand at
the initial weigh-in and
apologized for his failure
to make the lightweight
limit.
So who is sickest right now?
Corrales' promoter Gary Shaw
must be beside himself and
you know that WBC president
Jose Sulaiman must be
furious.
