September 27, 2006 - (My subject's true name has been changed)

I walk into Sue's office, "Do you know who Miguel Cotto is?"

"No," replies Sue.

"Do you know about Floyd Mayweather?"

"No, but I LOVE K-9," says Sue in an excited tone, big blue eyes lighting up.

Sue, is one of my co-workers, she absolutely loves The Contender series. She could care less about Pay Per View, H.B.O., or Showtime, but she knows The Contender cast up and down and back again.

"Sue, you know that mess is not real boxing, they edit it down and take the most exciting moments. Then they add sound effects to the punches, right?"

Sue could care less, "Do you think K-9 could win it all?"

I find it interesting when individuals involved with The Contender tout it as the revitalization of boxing for the American masses, when in all reality, the fights they present, are not a true boxing product.

When The Contender final was announced for Staples Center, here in Los Angeles, Sue immediately dropped a cool grand for a pair of ringside seats. I tried to warn her.

"Sue, that is crazy, you will not be seeing edited fights, you will be seeing live fights. Do you want to spend that much money on a sport you have never seen live?"

"Do you think Sugar Ray Leonard will be there," questioned an excited Sue.

The big night has come and gone and Sue loved The Contender. The competition and brutality of live boxing took her in. Sue even asked me when there would be more fights on television and when and where she could attend another live fight.

Maybe The Contender is on to something.

"I really think K-9 could be Champion one day," commented Sue

Nobody ever said they were producing educated fight fans.
