Business Blunder By Golden Boy

Shaw Not Letting Chico Jump Over The Wall Without A Fight

A member of Team Corrales told Pound4Pound on Friday afternoon that although he thinks Diego will eventually end up with Golden Boy, he is not so sure the deal is 100% official, and now we know why.

Reports are circulating today that Diego is still contractually obligated to Shaw for at least one more fight and the promoter plans on holding Corrales to that commitment, or else. Like the premature GB announcements in the past, our source noted, "Look at the Juan Diaz deal, Golden Boy was saying they signed him, then he jumped to King!"

Our Corrales source questioned the business sense of GB CEO Richard Schaeffer: "I don't know why Richard allows them to send out these press releases so early like that all the time, but that's what he do!"

In sending out the early press release Golden Boy has once again jumped the gun and now it's a case of , "let the chips fall were they may!" Seems to be a very strange bargaining tactic for a company that proclaims to be in it to change the face of boxing for the good, yet time and time again is involved in seemingly sketchy negotiations.

From the Juan Diaz debacle and onward it seems every time Golden Boy snags a fighter there are legal ramifications surrounding the signing. One only need to look at the yet to be settled Manny Pacquiao/Top Rank situation to understand this is not the first time Golden Boy has jumped the gun in an attempt to sign a so-called free agent.

Moving on, when we asked about Chico's long time promoter and advisor Gary Shaw, the source proclaimed, "Gary always treated Diego real well and even made him a bundle of money after that loss, 1.2 million dollars. Yes, Gary always treated Chico right, but I think Diego just wants to test the waters out there."

No doubt the waters he wants to test are the waters that are becoming the shores that most Golden Boy fighters frequent themselves, that being the crystal clear and treasure filled waters of HBO.

One with even a smattering of legal knowledge would view this current GB mess and ask this obvious question:

Why would Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya apparently take the word of Diego Corrales and his manager that was a free agent without have their lawyers check with Shaw to make sure there is not a legal issue?

It's now not a mystery why Golden Boy Executive and Champion Shane Mosley and his wife Jin suddenly came out of seclusion and were in Las Vegas during the Corrales vs. Casamayor festivities. From the weigh in to the post fight, the Mosleys were on hand, and it was more than just to support a longtime friend. Obviously it was meant to sway Chico over to the other side, and apparently it worked.

Another source told us that a major topic of discussion during that weekend was " the pennies that Diego has been making at Showtime and the real Dollars he could earn at HBO.

Quite frankly, you can't argue that point. With Shaw, Diego has become a household name and earned the respect of the boxing community, but being with Shaw also meant Showtime, and though he earned respect, Diego could not earn the type of dollars that HBO presents, it's hard to argue with that.

But at the same time one has to ask himself where do loyalties really lie? Just last month Corrales told Pound4Pound when we asked about his relationship with Shaw, "My concern is that I am being treated fairly and when things are going right for me, then I am happy. And Gary so far has always done so. And that?s it, I?m happy!? Later in that same conversation Chico said ?It?s very easy to follow the crowd, but until I see Gary doing something wrong, and I never have, and as long as he keeps things on the up and up and let?s me know what?s going on, then I don?t have any reason to make waves, all I want to do is my job! I am happiest when I am doing my job, that?s how I work. Gary has always done his job and kept things peaceful with me I am sure he will keep it that way.?

The next question you have to ask is, what did Shaw do wrong? He didn't come in overweight for a fight. He wasn't responsible for the site fee to be yanked out from under himself and he wasn't responsible for Diego getting stripped of his belt. Along the way Shaw stuck by Chico's side when Diego decided to forego his Championship fight with an overweight Jose Luis Castillo which meant a huge hit to his wallet, a true sign of loyalty to his fighter when other less concerned promoters might have coaxed Diego to fight on against Castillo and cash in.

It appears that if Shaw has done something wrong it was to not put HBO in his back pocket. Look at all the fighters he lost recently and guess where their next TV appearance will be?

You guessed it, HBO!

Also in our report from last month we got some comments from Shaw about Diego and looking back at them now you have to believe Shaw was blind sided by this maneuver. "Diego is special, I feel the warmth, I feel the loyalty. And I hope that you won?t be calling me a year from now or five years from now to ask me how I feel now that Diego Corrales left me. I hope that day never comes because some fighters you don?t care and some fighters you just expect it from, but losing Diego Corrales would be a deep hurt.?

Boxing can be one of the harshest sports when it comes down to business, and in this instance you get an idea of what it all boils down too.

It's one of the most overused sayings in the sport, but it is so apropos here,

"If it doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense!"
