Benn in the Hall?
By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews
When you
think of Nigel Benn, you think of
words like fury, rage, and ferocity.
These were his trademarks in the
ring and provided uncommon
excitement and entertainment.
Unfortunately, his career defining
fight ended with tragic results and
sometimes detracts from his entire
body of work. As one writer stated,
" One man's finest hour was the end
of another man's life as he knew
it."

The
Dream
By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews
 |
Many great fighters who have
thrilled us over the years, whether fighting for a
championship belt or at a local club, face retirement
without any kind of financial assistance or access to
medical care. Many suffer from depression, alcohol and
substance abuse, rage disorders, homelessness or being
indigent, and the horrific effects of pugilistic
dementia. Bobby Chacon, about whom I have written at
great length, Willie Pep, Jimmy Ellis and Wilfredo
Benitez, come to mind.
Even the great Joe Louis died penniless. Some, like Greg
Page or Gerald McClellan, have been injured in the ring.
It can occur in a split second. For many ex-fighters, a
combination of these factors adds up to a dismal
outlook.

Corrales Insider Questions
Business Blunder By
Golden Boy
Shaw Not Letting Chico Jump Over The Wall Without A Fight
Written By William Trillo

A member of Team Corrales
told Pound4Pound on Friday afternoon that although he
thinks Diego will eventually end up with Golden Boy, he
is not so sure the deal is 100% official, and now we
know why.
Reports are circulating today that Diego is still
contractually obligated to Shaw for at least one more
fight and the promoter plans on holding Corrales to that
commitment, or else. Like the premature GB announcements
in the past, our source noted, "Look at the Juan Diaz
deal, Golden Boy was saying they signed him, then he
jumped to King!"

The "Schoolboy" and "Blade"

The headline
read: "Darrin Van Horn, a sophomore at
the University of Kentucky, won his 32d
bout without defeat last night when he
knocked out Norberto Bueno at 1:26 of
the third round of a scheduled 10-round
junior middleweight bout at the Felt
Forum."
I remember noting this in some magazine
back in 1986 and was amazed at this
young fighter's record. He would go on
to win 7 more fights and amass a 39-0
record (23 ko's) before losing a UD to
tough Gianfranco Rosi (48-2 coming in).
But previously, he had whipped Robert
Hines (24-1-1 at the time) for the IBF
Light Middleweight Title, the first of
two world belts he would garner.(Story)

Bowe in the Hall?
By TED

Record:
42-1-0-1 with 33 wins by ko. Riddick
"Big Daddy" Bowe had great amateur
success and won the silver medal in the
1988 Seoul Olympics, losing to future
undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox
Lewis. Bowe also won the New York Golden
Gloves championship as well as various
tournaments. After winning the silver
medal, he turned professional.
Style: Bowe had great size (6'5"
and weighed approximately 230 pound).
His strength made him very difficult to
fight. He was unusually quick for his
size and fought in an orthodox manner.
Possessing all the tools necessary for
greatness, he could fight just as
effectively on the inside as he could
from the outside and had exceptional
power in both hands as well as a lethal
jab.

Finding the

Perhaps he's considering retirement,

heavyweight champions and we need to be
more grateful.

Underestimating can be Unhealthy

When Ray
Mancini was riding high as the
real-life Italian Stallion, his last
moment in the sun would be when he
met two-time world champion (but
shop worn) Bobby Chacon, 52-6-1 at
the time, and easily beat him in
three rounds. He would then lose his
title by upset stoppage to a then
unknown Livingston Bramble, 20-1-1,
in 1984 but not before giving an all
out effort, the result of which was
an overnight stay at a hospital and
over 70 stitches to close cuts
around his eye. The Mancini camp had
badly underestimated the colorful
Virgin Islander. Bramble's non stop
offensive and sharp punches turned
"Boom Boom's" face into a hideous
and bloody mess.

Saturday, November 13, 1984, and
highly touted Jaime Garza was
scheduled to meet rugged Juan "Kid"

Kingston, NY.
Meza was a clear 5-1 underdog to the

to Danny "Little Red" Lopez for his
full throttle offense, porous
defense, and ability to come off the
canvas and put his opponent out. In

o'clock rush hour is maddening. When
I am lucky, Natalie, my two year old
daughter, takes a nap and I call
boxers, managers, or whoever else
might entertain me.
Today's victim was "Fearless" Frank
Espinoza, manager of current junior
featherweight top perro Israel
Vazquez. FightNightNews boss man
Michael Marley coined Frank,
"Fearless", but I like to call him
"Freeway" Frank.

• Five indelible boxing memories

1)
Tracking all the way back to 1945. I
have watched literally thousands of
fights during my 69 years of life
and consider myself something of an
aficionado. I have seen some things,
I'll tell you. The unpredictable
excitement that was Bob Satterfield,
the fights between Charles, Louis
and Walcott. LaMotta-Robinson, Ward-Gatti,
Ward-Green, Ward-Augustus,
Zale-Graziano, Corrales-Castillo,
Ali-Frazier, Patterson-Johansson,
and Barrera-Morales.

• Interview: Season One of "The Contender" Star Peter Manfredo Jr.
By ROBERT
JONES

Peter
Manfredo (25-3 11 KO's) is now less
than two weeks away from his October
14th battle with undefeated prospect
Joey Spina (19-0-1 14 KO's).
Manfredo is well known for being on
the hit shot "The Contender," not
only in American, but all over the
world, as he tells us in this
interview.
He also told what he
thought about this season of "The
Contender," his thoughts on Spina,
and if the rumors are true he could
be next in line for Roy Jones Jr.
Robert Jones: You're father,
Peter Sr., was also a fighter. Is
that what influenced you into
becoming a fighter?
Peter Manfredo: Yeah, I kind
of had no choice. When I was five
years old I was in the gym.
He was a
fighter and my uncle was a fighter.
So, it was kind of like a family
thing.

Fight Night News is killing the
Competition, Remember Where You Heard it First

October
3rd, 2006 - Seems like more and more
breaking news on other boxing web
sites is appearing here long before
it graces the cover of other "up to
the minute" news outlets. Marley's
minions are starting to spread
across the boxing world.
The recent piss fighting between
Dan Goossen and
Lou DiBella is classic and we
can thank top-notch writer Nat
Gotttlieb. Best thing is, nobody has
to pay a dime to read the dogfight
between two of boxing's biggest
promoters.

There is no doubt that the Internet has pumped much-needed blood into the
staggering sport of boxing. There are five or six web sites which provide
lively information, fight results and even sometimes insightful analysis.
Unfortunately, some of the writing seems to be at the fifth-grade level.
Much of what passes for boxing "writing" now is done by fans. Newspapers, for
the most part, have abandoned the boxing beat. It seems ridiculous but there
are so-called boxing "writers" at major papers who cover as few as three or
four fight cards each year.
Now comes (forgive the egotism
but, as Ali said, "it ain' bragging if you
can do it")
something completely different. I call it Michael
Marley's FightNightNews.com
