Interview: Season One of "The Contender" Cast Member Jimmy Lange

By ROBERT JONES

If you are a fan of the hit show "The Contender," you will recognize Jimmy Lange's name from the inaugural cast.

Lange (26-3-1 18 KO's) a Great Falls, VA native will be fighting in front of his hometown crowd at George Mason University this Saturday night against Thomas Wilt (20-5 4 KO's). Lange is coming off a loss to another season one Contender cast member, Joey Gilbert, but since adding Buddy McGirt as his trainer, he still hopes to make some noise in the middleweight division before it's all said and done.

Robert Jones: You're fight is just over 72 hours away. How are you feeling?

Jimmy Lange: I feel great. I had a great training camp. I have no bumps and bruises. I'm just ready to go; I wish it was tonight.

RJ: You'll be fighting in your hometown in front of 10,000 of your closest friends. Is that inspirational or a distraction?

JL: Oh no, I think it's definitely an inspiration. It's great to be able to fight in front of your fans. I have the most loyal fans anybody could ask for. For them to come and for me to give them what they want to see is definitely an inspiration.

RJ: What do you know about your opponent Thomas Wilt?

JL: I know that he throws a lot of punches. He's a very high-action fighter. He comes to fight. He's real tough. He's a tall guy, so I'll have to get inside and break down his body a little bit. That's about it. I know there's going to be a lot of action this fight because we are both action fighters.

RJ: How have you felt your game improve since you've teamed up with Buddy McGirt?

JL: He's taught me how to be more of a professional fighter instead of going in there and looking for a knockout quick and banging. He taught me how to be patient and how to fight 10 rounds.

He taught me how to go one round at a time and putting a whole fight together instead of going in there and throwing the whole book away right away.

RJ: What's it like having your dad, who is your manager, working with you?

JL: The relationship is very good. I think that I'm very fortunate. I don't necessarily believe in father son relationships when it comes to business but, ironically, something clicks with us and we get along very good. I think he does a great job at what he does.

RJ: You were on the first season of "The Contender." What did you think of this year's cast?

JL: I thought it was fantastic. I thought that they were able to eliminate a lot of their mistakes from the first year. I thought that they truly did a great job and it's a tribute to the people out in LA.

RJ: I'll be there representing FightNightNews this Saturday. What can I expect to see when it's time for you to fight?

JL: You can expect me to go in there and do my job and box like I can box.

That means putting my jab on him and letting that set up the rest of my fight, using that to get inside, work the body, and break this guy down.

RJ: If you get by Wilt, do you have any other possible opponents set up?

JL: I don't ever like to look ahead. If there are rumors I don't like to pay attention to them because I'm completely focused on Wilt.

RJ:
We hope you can check out the interview on FightNightNews. Is there anything else you would like to add?

JL: I would just like to say that this is going to be a terrific show. We've got a great undercard and I think everyone for coming out and their continued support.

RJ: I can't wait to go. It's actually going to be the first fight I'm covering as the member of the media. I'm looking forward to it. I hope to talk to you afterwards and good luck.

JL: Come by and I would absolutely talk to you after the fight. Take care now.
