Benn in the Hall?

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

When you think of Nigel Benn, you think of words like fury, rage, and ferocity. These were his trademarks in the ring and provided uncommon excitement and entertainment.

Unfortunately, his career defining fight ended with tragic results and sometimes detracts from his entire body of work. As one writer stated, " One man's finest hour was the end of another man's life as he knew it."

The Dream

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Many great fighters who have thrilled us over the years, whether fighting for a championship belt or at a local club, face retirement without any kind of financial assistance or access to medical care. Many suffer from depression, alcohol and substance abuse, rage disorders, homelessness or being indigent, and the horrific effects of pugilistic dementia. Bobby Chacon, about whom I have written at great length, Willie Pep, Jimmy Ellis and Wilfredo Benitez, come to mind.

Even the great Joe Louis died penniless. Some, like Greg Page or Gerald McClellan, have been injured in the ring. It can occur in a split second. For many ex-fighters, a combination of these factors adds up to a dismal outlook.

On the flip side of things, www.fightwireimages.com will also be

why they became photographers, and that's making the best images
possible", added Centeno.

Peak into the Head of a Boxing Writer

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

A big disclaimer at the outset. This is just my opinion and only mine.

Heck, it is virtually impossible to get two boxing writers to ever agree on anything.

But I think it might be interesting to share the mental checklist I use that so that readers know where at least I am coming from.

Here are some thoughts in no particular order:

Corrales Insider Questions

Business Blunder By Golden Boy

Shaw Not Letting Chico Jump Over The Wall Without A Fight

Written By William Trillo www.Pound4Pound.com
Foto Follie: Bret "The Threat" Newton

A member of Team Corrales told Pound4Pound on Friday afternoon that although he thinks Diego will eventually end up with Golden Boy, he is not so sure the deal is 100% official, and now we know why.

Reports are circulating today that Diego is still contractually obligated to Shaw for at least one more fight and the promoter plans on holding Corrales to that commitment, or else. Like the premature GB announcements in the past, our source noted, "Look at the Juan Diaz deal, Golden Boy was saying they signed him, then he jumped to King!"

The "Schoolboy" and "Blade"

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

The headline read: "Darrin Van Horn, a sophomore at the University of Kentucky, won his 32d bout without defeat last night when he knocked out Norberto Bueno at 1:26 of the third round of a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight bout at the Felt Forum."

I remember noting this in some magazine back in 1986 and was amazed at this young fighter's record. He would go on to win 7 more fights and amass a 39-0 record (23 ko's) before losing a UD to tough Gianfranco Rosi (48-2 coming in).

But previously, he had whipped Robert Hines (24-1-1 at the time) for the IBF Light Middleweight Title, the first of two world belts he would garner.

Bowe in the Hall?

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Record: 42-1-0-1 with 33 wins by ko. Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe had great amateur success and won the silver medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, losing to future undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. Bowe also won the New York Golden Gloves championship as well as various tournaments. After winning the silver medal, he turned professional.

Style: Bowe had great size (6'5" and weighed approximately 230 pound). His strength made him very difficult to fight. He was unusually quick for his size and fought in an orthodox manner. Possessing all the tools necessary for greatness, he could fight just as effectively on the inside as he could from the outside and had exceptional power in both hands as well as a lethal jab.

Thinking outside the box: Will the real heavyweight please stand up?

By Jerrell Ellerbe
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Please complete the (1) question questionnaire at the bottom of this article.

Finding the real heavyweight prodigy today in 2006 is like trying to find "Where's Waldo." Perhaps he's considering retirement, sitting out amongst the pasture of a sold out crowd or considering packing on 20 or 30+lbs. Maybe there are already heavyweight champions and we need to be more grateful.

Why you should buy Mayweather - Baldomir in November

By Jerrell Ellerbe
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Anything can happen in the sport of boxing. Mayweather - Baldomir has the potential to be an extraordinary pay per view event.

Carlos Baldomir has provided incentives that he may be able to test Floyd if he doesn't come correct! In addition, this could be another feather in Mayweather's cap, if Baldomir isn't ready to handle the velocity of Mayweather's attack.

Brock Father: FightNews Report on SuperFighters is Fabricated

Leaves Door Open to Participating

By William Trillo
Pound4Pound.com and Nat Gottlieb

Calvin Brock and his father/manager Calvance are fuming over an apparently false story that was planted in FightNews.com which quoted Calvin as saying he has removed himself from the $5 million one-night only, "Superfighter Heavyweight Boxing Tournament" on December 1 in Melbourne, Australia. "That story is fabricated," said a livid Calvance Brock. The story,
later picked up and run on its blog by TheSweetScience.com, said that Brock, who fights Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF belt Nov. 11, "had been released from his contract to fight in the $5 million" tournament."

Underestimating can be Unhealthy

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

When Ray Mancini was riding high as the real-life Italian Stallion, his last moment in the sun would be when he met two-time world champion (but shop worn) Bobby Chacon, 52-6-1 at the time, and easily beat him in three rounds. He would then lose his title by upset stoppage to a then unknown Livingston Bramble, 20-1-1, in 1984 but not before giving an all out effort, the result of which was an overnight stay at a hospital and over 70 stitches to close cuts around his eye. The Mancini camp had badly underestimated the colorful Virgin Islander. Bramble's non stop offensive and sharp punches turned "Boom Boom's" face into a hideous and bloody mess.

Lightening Strikes in Kingston

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

It was Saturday, November 13, 1984, and highly touted Jaime Garza was scheduled to meet rugged Juan "Kid" Meza in the main event at the Mid Town Neighborhood Center in Kingston, NY.

Meza was a clear 5-1 underdog to the 40-0 heavy handed puncher from Californian who was being compared to Danny "Little Red" Lopez for his full throttle offense, porous defense, and ability to come off the canvas and put his opponent out. In fact, Garza won his title some 17 months before by coming off the floor in typical "Little Red" fashion to knock out Bobby Berna in two and take the belt vacated by the legendary Wilfredo Gomez.

FNN Exclusive Interview: Adrian Mora

By Troy Ondrizek
Staff Writer FightNightNews

I got a call a little while back from a boy of mine and he was praising this young welterweight prospect named Adrian Mora.

So I hopped online and found out that Mora wasn't so young (29) but was a solid prospect and I left it at that. My boy called me again later on and he kept bragging how good Mora was, so I was like fine, I'll try to get some video of him, calm down.

FNN Exclusive Interview: Chauncy Welliver

By Troy Ondrizek
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Chauncy Welliver has been the butt-end of many jokes regarding the heavyweight division these days.

People have mocked him for his fat content, of which there is plenty.

Hecklers have fired shots at Welliver in regards to some dubious decisions in his favor and his inability to crack an egg, let alone a heavyweight's chin.

My "New" Top Twenty since 1945

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

They say one learns from his or her mistakes.

Let's see if there is any truth to that as I come up with a revised list below.

And why since 1945? Because I actually witnessed each listed boxer fight at one time or another, and I don't mean by video.

Of course, I carefully analyzed their records, ko percentages, skill-sets, the era in which they fought, entire body of work, quality of opposition and other important criteria as well.

Calzaghe vs. Kessler: Someone's "O" must go!

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Joe Calzaghe, W 42 (31 ko's) - 0 vs. Mikkel Kessler, 38 (29) ko's) -0 is a fight that has to be made and someone's "O" must go! Off their respective fights with Sakio Bika and Markus Beyer tonight, Kessler must be given a reasonable chance to slow down the Welshman's express train.

Joe had to battle his way to the final bell of a very hard night's work with the game Australian (by way of Cameroon), Bika, who came to win. Joe was breathing hard at the end,On the other Hand, Kessler brutally dispatched WBC super middleweight champion Markus Beyer in three rounds and now owns both the WBA and WBC 168-pound belts.

The case for Virgil Hill in the Hall (IBHF)

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Next year Roberto Duran becomes eligible for induction into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame and that should be a slam dunk.

A few years later, Virgil "Quicksilver" Hill also will become eligible and I submit a reasonable, if not compelling case can be made for his induction as well. Let's look at the facts.

Virgil won his first fight in 1984 against Arthur Wright in Madison Square Garden. He defeated Clarence Osby in 1986 at the Felt Forum in New York City to win the WBC Continental Americas Light Heavyweight Title.

Ebb and Flow

By Ted Sares
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Certain fights feature what is known as ebb and flow. If you get lucky, you may see some, for none are more exciting. The first Castillo-Corrales fight and many of Micky Ward's fights are examples of this spectator's delight, and of course, the ebb and flow classic between Archie Moore and Canada's Yvonne Durelle in 1958 was one that all hardcore boxing fans must see or read about.

See a related article I did on FightNightNews entitled, "Five Indelible Boxing Memories."

Below are a few others to refresh your memory and maybe wet your appetite for more.

A Need for Passionate Advocates

By TED SARES
Staff Writer FightNightNews

Beethaeven Scottland was born in 1975 and died in 2001 at 26. He was a light-heavyweight who went into a coma after his televised fight on ESPN2 with George Khalid Jones on June 26, 2001.

After taking way too many clean punches to the head, he collapsed and then passed away on July 1. As a substitute for David Telesco, he had taken the fight on short notice. In fact, "Bee," 20-7 coming in, was scheduled to fight Dana Rucker," but Rucker pulled out with a legitimate injury. Since Beethaeven was in top shape, he took the fight against George Khalid Jones on the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York.
