OMAR
SHEIKA INTERVIEW |
What's going on Omar?
Nothing, man. I am just really upset
right now. Last week I heard that maybe
I could get a rematch with Jeff Lacy on
HBO and now my people tell me that Lacy
doesn't want to fight me. That's bs.
This punk is going around calling
Calzaghe out for a rematch and Calzaghe
almost killed him. I beat Lacy and got
robbed and his punk ass won't give me a
rematch because he is scared.
So you lost some respect for Lacy?
Of course, especially when he want's to
fight some bum in his comeback fight and
not me. But I'll give him the benefit of
the doubt and say that maybe he doesn't
know about an offer to fight me and his
people are just protecting him like a
little girl. I guess they don't want to
see him take another beating. Or maybe
he is just scare to get two losses in a
row. I would end his career. One thing
is for sure, HBO should not let him
fight some bum. That's a big problem in
boxing, the networks let these top guys
fight nobodies.
When was the fight supposed to take
place?
Man, I think like December. I don't
care, it can be tomorrow, he is such a
punk that it would be a very easy fight,
especially since Calzage destroyed him.
He is finished and I would put an
exclamation point that this is the end
of his career if we fought.
Any last words?
Yeah, I am old school. I fight anybody,
anytime, anywhere. Maybe I have some
looses, but that can happen when you
fight the best in the world. People
forget that I have fought and had wars
with Joe Calzaghe, Eric Lucas, Thomas
Tate, Glen Johnson, Scott Pemberton
(three times) Marcus Beyer, James
Butler, and that punk-ass Jeff Lacy, who
I know I beat and would destroy a second
time. Also, I had some major injuries
for many of these fights. I fight wars
and I just wish boxing was like it was
in the old days, where warriors like me
get rewarded for fighting the most
exciting fights every time out against
the best in the world and guys like Lacy
get exposed for the frauds that they
are. Also, people forget that I am only
29 years old. But I go out on the line
every time out so that the fans can
enjoy a good fight.
Well thanks Omar. Boxing needs more
fighters like you. I hope you get the
fight.
Thanks, man. I read FIGHTNIGHTNEWS every
day and I really like the site. Also, I
want to thank my fans for their support.
They really help me get by when guys
like this duck me. I just hope Lacy gets
some courage together and agrees to
fight me. |

Commonwealth Bantamweight Championship:
Munyai vs. Haskins |
|

|
Can
Lightning Strike Twice'
After delivering what most experts
and fight fans were calling the
'fight of the century' in Manchester
between Jamie Moore and Matthew
Macklin, Maloney Promotions are
please to be returning to their home
base at the York Hall in Bethnal
Green, London.
It's in this famous venue that the
Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion
Tshifhiwa Munyai from South Africa
will take on Commonwealth Flyweight
Champion Lee Haskins, who makes an
audacious attempt to move up and
become a two-weight champion. This
fascinating clash of styles and
builds will be decided over the
championship distance of 12 x 3
minutes rounds at the York Hall on
Friday, 6 October.
The clash of styles will be the
stand up straight punching of the
champion Munyai against the hands
down unorthodox swings of the
challenger Haskins, a man who has
modeled his style on that of Naseem
Hamed. The clash of builds will be
the tall and rangy South African
against the short and compact
Bristolian.
Munyai's last visit to these shores
saw him go straight up to the top of
the unwanted list as he destroyed
previously unbeaten British Champion
Martin Power to win the Commonwealth
title in nine rounds. Despite that,
this is still a fight that Haskins
has personally asked for.
"I'm fit as I have ever been in my
life," says unbeaten Lee. "It's a
great opportunity and I intend to
grab it with both hands. I don't see
Munyai's reputation as a problem. In
fact, I see it as a stepping stone
in the path to becoming world
champion."
Chief support sees Lewisham's Junior
McDonald square off against Epsom's
Tommy Eastwood for the Southern Area
Cruiserweight Championship. It's the
unbeaten puncher against the gutsy
battler in what could be fight of
the night.
Former triple ABA Champion and
double Four Nations Champion Nick
McDonald makes his pro debut at
super bantamweight and the only
licensed Sikh boxer in the country,
former amateur star, Akaash Bhatia,
looks to make it three unbeaten as a
pro.
A range of other local and up and
coming boxers will make up the
eleven bout fight card. Doors will
open at 6PM and the first fight will
be at 6.30PM.
Maloney Promotions in association
with Sanigar Events presents the
Commonwealth Bantamweight
Championship between Tshifhiwa
Munyai and Lee Haskins. The event
takes place at York Hall in London,
England on Friday, 6 October. Sky
Sports will televise the main event
live on SS1 commencing at 22:00.
Tickets are priced £30 and £60 and
are available by calling the Maloney
Promotions box office at 0871 226
1508 or by logging onto to

there in support of Joey Gilbert and
the purists will be there for the
exciting match-up between the
brawler Frank and the boxer Cauthen

Carols Baldomir and Israel Vazuez
Honored by World Boxing Hall of Fame |
|
LOS
ANGELES - Two members of the Sycuan
Ringside Promotions stable will be
honored by the World Boxing Hall of
Fame at the 27th annual banquet of
champions in Los Angeles Oct. 14.
World Boxing Council and lineal
welterweight champion Carlos
Baldomir will be named 'Fighter of
the Year' and Israel Vazquez's
grueling fight with Jhonny Gonzalez
will be named 'Fight of the Year.'
|
 |
Past
winners of the World Boxing Hall of
Fame 'Fighter of the Year' include
Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones Jr.,
Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley.
Inductees this year into the World
Boxing Hall of Fame include Roberto
Duran and Matthew Saad Muhammad.
Baldomir burst onto the national
scene by defeating Zab Judah Jan. 7,
2006, with a 12-round decision to
capture the title. He followed that
performance with a spectacular
ninth-round stoppage of Arturo Gatti
July 22. Currently, Baldomir is
training to fight Floyd Mayweather
Jr. Nov. 4 at the Mandalay Resort &
Casino in Las Vegas and live on HBO
Pay-Per-View.
'This has been a great year for me
so far, and I'm honored to be given
this award,' Baldomir said. 'But I
have some unfinished business to
take care of Nov. 4 that will leave
no doubt that I am the 'Fighter of
the Year.' '
Vazquez, the WBC super bantamweight
champion, rebounded from two early
knockdowns to take command of the
wildly entertaining fight with
Gonzalez Sept. 16, en route to a
10th-round stoppage.
'That was a war out there with
Gonzalez,' Vazquez said. 'I'm proud
I came out on top. I always try to
put on a great show for the fans and
I think we did just that.'
'Sycuan Ringside Promotions, of
course, is excited to be associated
with Carlos and Israel,' said Glenn
Quiroga, President of Sycuan
Ringside Promotions. 'They haven
proven themselves to be men who can
overcome all obstacles and succeed
above and beyond all expectations of
the so-called experts.'
'Carlos has been nothing short of
incredible this year and Israel had
me almost as weary watching his
fight as he must have been
participating in it,' said Scott
Woodworth, Vice President of Sycuan
Ringside Promotions. 'It's a banner
year for both gentlemen and a banner
year for Sycuan Ringside Promotions
as well.' |

Fight Promoter
University Announces
Online Promoter Forum
And FPU II In Review
|
 |
Newport
Beach, CA: Fight Promoter University
President and Founder Roy
Englebrecht has added a new wrinkle
to his Fight Promoter University
concept, with the announcement today
of an online Fight Promoter
University Promoter Message Board
and Forum.
Now for the first time, current or
aspiring fight promoters will have a
place to go to ask questions of
other promoters, exchange ideas,
promote their shows, and discuss
anything to do with boxing or MMA
promotions. |
"The success of the first two Fight
Promoter University sessions has
been
overwhelming," said Englebrecht. "To
hear from FPU graduates who have
gone back
to their cities and promoted their
first show using many of the
techniques
taught at FPU, and have success, is
very humbling."
"My whole reason in starting Fight
Promoter University, was to give
people the
correct tools necessary to achieve
the same success in the fight
promotion
business that I have had, and it is
happening, continued Englebrecht.
Now with
the addition of a Fight Promoters
Message Board, anyone, anywhere
in the world
will be able to obtain information
from others on any subject."
Also featured on the updated Fight
Promoter University website at
fightpromoteruniversity.com, is
a photo review and testimonials from
the August
session of Fight Promoter
University, which featured
appearances by Jim Lampley
and Emanuel Steward.

Andrade heads on Olympian journey |
|
|
PROVIDENCE (September 24, 2006)
One of America's brightest stars for its
boxing future, 18-year-old prodigy
Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade, leaves his
Providence home this week for the first
leg of what he hopes will be his
Olympian journey, competing in the 2006
National Police Athletic League (PAL)
Championships in Oxnard, California. |
 |
"I want to make the 2008 Olympic team
and bring home a gold medal from
China," the speedy Andrade confidently
said. "My long range goal is to
become a world champion as a pro and
retire undefeated. The first step,
though, is at the PALs."
Andrade, the No. 1 rated welterweight in
the U.S. for the past two years, is
the two-time U.S. National Championships
and 2006 National Golden Gloves
champion. The PALs (September 30-October
7) is the first of several
qualifiers for the US Boxing Trials, a
prelude to the US Box-Offs that
determines berths on the 2008 US Olympic
Boxing Team.
PAL winners automatically qualify in
their respective weight classes for the
U.S. Trials. In Oxnard, Andrade will
compete in the same 152-pound division
he has dominated in the U.S. for the
past two years. His main competition
figures to come from Fernando Guerrero
and Boyd Melson, who Demetrius
defeated in this year's National Golden
Gloves and The Nationals,
respectively, as well as top rated
welterweights such as Charles Hatley,
Greg Carter, Peter Haro and Keith
Thurman.
"I'm taking things one step at a time,"
the slick southpaw Andrade added,
"but after I qualify at 152 pounds, I
may box in some of the other
qualifiers at 165 pounds (where he
recently lost a close decision in the
championship match at the National
Under-19 Tournament). I'm 6-0 and the
Olympics are two years away. If I'm
having a problem making 152, I may try
to make the Olympic team as a
middleweight. The weight class I'm more
comfortable in and have the best chance
at medaling will be what I choose in
the U.S. Boxing Trials."
Andrade sports an approximate 128-21
amateur record and boxes out of 401 Gym
in Cranston. |

|
 |
|
LAS VEGAS
(September 22, 2006) – Silverhawk
Championship Boxing has signed three
Mexican fighters to exclusive
promotional contracts -- Manuel
"Shotgun" Gomez, Fernando "El Pillo"
Trejo and unbeaten light middleweight
sensation Alexis Camacho."We decided our
boxing stable needed more diversity,
especially with Silverhawk now promoting
fights on a regular basis in Las Vegas,"
Silverhawk vice president of boxing
operations Jeff Grmoja said..
"Mexican fighters, of course, are known
for their toughness and we're delighted
to have signed these three Mexican
warriors. Gomez' last fight was a major
world title shot; Trejo remains ranked
among the top 20 super featherweights in
the world, while Camacho rates as one of
the hottest prospects in boxing today."
Gomez (28-11-2, 19 KOs) is coming off of
a WBO title fight against Antonio
Margarito this past February in Las
Vegas. The 34-year-old native of Nuevo
Laredo, now fighting out of Laredo

The 32-year-old Trejo (27-12-4, 17 KOs)

round TKO in 2005. He also has beaten
Luis Antonio Arceo (19-3-2) and Jose
Leonardo Cruz (11-1-2), both by 12-round
unanimous decision.
Two-time Mexico National amateur
champion Camacho (12-0, 11 KOs) is
unbeaten in 12 bouts and has put 11 of
his opponents to sleep. Now fighting out
of San Antonio (TX) by way of Monterrey,
Mexico, Alexis is riding an 11-fight
knockout streak after going the distance
in his 2004 pro debut.
Gomez challenges WBC Continental
Americas light middleweight champion
Jose "Temible" Varela (15-2, 11 KOs) in
the 12-round main event October 13 at
the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Camacho also is scheduled to fight on
the card against an opponent to be
determined.

CALZAGHE - I DON'T WANT TO GET ARRESTED!
|
| |
Double
World Champion Joe Calzaghe fears he
could be arrested if Jeff Lacy gets
his wish of rematch against the
worlds number one
super-middleweight!
The undefeated Welshman gave the
mouthy American a boxing master
class lesson in March when he put on
one of the finest ring displays ever
by a British boxer to unify the WBO
and IBF world titles.
Lacy will have his first fight since
that drubbing in December at his
hometown of Tampa, Florida, on the
Winky Wright vs. Ike Quartey card
and wants a rematch with Calzaghe
after he's had a few more fights.
|
 |
A bemused Calzaghe, who is preparing
to defend his titles against Sakio
Bika at the M.E.N Arena on Saturday
14th October, said, "Is this guy
crazy or is he still concussed'"
"I can give Lacy 1006 good reason
why he should not get a rematch
against me because that's the number
of times I landed with punches on
the night and I can count the number
of times he caught me on one hand -
four,"
"Lacy will never be the same fighter
again after the one-sided beating I
gave him and how can he call for a
rematch when the first fight wasn't
even close or controversial, the
only controversy is why his corner
didn't pull him out of the fight
sooner,"
He added, "If Lacy gets in the ring
with me again I'm scared I will get
arrested for aggravated assault!"
"Anyway, it's his buddies in Florida
that I'm gunning for Winky Wright
and Antonio Tarver who are both on
the run from me, the only way I'll
get them in the ring is if a bounty
hunter manages to catch 'em!"
US TV giants HBO will televise
Calzaghe's title defence against
Bika on the 'Boxing After Dark"
series at 11 P.M. ET/PT and in the
UK, ITV1 will broadcast the fight
live.
Tickets are priced at: £40, £50,

Spina promises to KO Manfredo |
"The
Contender Special - Put Up or Shut
Up" Oct. 14 in Providence
PROVIDENCE (September 20, 2006) -
Outspoken super middleweight Joey
"KO Kid" Spina promises to knockout
Providence cross-town rival Peter
"The Pride of Providence" Manfredo,
Jr. on October 14 in the 12-round
main event on "The Contender Special
- Put Up or Shut Up" at the Dunkin'
Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode
Island.
|
|
 |
"It was
business but now it's personal
because of what Peter and his father
have said about me like being
nothing more than a club fighter,"
Spina said from his training camp in
Las Vegas. "I don't really like all
of the yapping, but I'm going to
knock ‘The Pride of Providence' out,
right in the middle of the ring, in
our hometown. I learned how to box
block to block, not on a television
show; if he's the ‘Pride of
Providence,' I'm the ‘King of
Providence.' I earned that name.
Manfredo doesn't even live in
Providence anymore.
"I've only had about 20 amateur
fights and he's had more than 300.
He's a better boxer, a better
technician than I am. Peter's going
to bounce in and out and in the
first couple of rounds he may make
me look bad. But once he sits in the
pocket, his lights will go out when
my bombs start landing." |
Spina (19-0-1, 14 KOs), rated No. 16
by the World Boxing Council, is the
reigning WBC USNBC and IBF
Intercontinental super middleweight
title-holder. Joey and Manfredo
(25-3, 11 KOs), a finalist in Season
1 of The Contender, grew-up within a
mile of each other in the
Italian-American section of
Providence, Silver Lake. They later
sparred as amateurs and during
Spina's early pro career.
"I didn't know him very well growing
up because he moved," Joey
explained, "I got to know him later.
We never fought but did spar and he
got the better of me. I'm a much
different fighter today. For the
first nine or 10 fights of my pro
career I didn't train. I didn't take
boxing serious and fought because I
needed money. Hey, Peter's a good
fighter and great guy, but this
fight means everything to me. I'm
using my bonus to get my father out
of a nursing home to live with me.
The winner of this fight will be
rated high and get a big fight next
year.
"Our fight is being presented as
he's the good guy and I'm the bad
guy. I really don't care. But I'm
being made out to be a party guy.
I'm only 29 and when I'm not in
training, I love to have a good
time, but I've never been more
serious in training than for this
fight against him. I'm sparring with
(former Contender) Ishe Smith (18-1,
8 KOs) and Anthony Hanshaw (20-0, 13
KOs). I want a lot in life that I
don't have right now, so this fight
means much more to me than it does
to him. I'm motivated to fight for
my family. And when the _____
starts, I can back it up."
The former NABO super middleweight
champion Manfredo, rated No. 14 by
the WBC and No. 15 by the
International Boxing Federation, is
coming of a devastating third-round
TKO win against former world No. 1
contender Scott "The Sandman"
Pemberton this past February before
nearly 10,000 Providence fans at The
Dunk.
"I think Joey is too strong and hits
too hard for Manfredo," Spina's
manager Pat Doljanan remarked. "I
don't think Peter is a 12-round
fighter, more like six to eight.
Peter and his dad think Joey's a
soft touch and the fight against
(Jessie) Brinkley is a template to
beat Joey. But Joey was super-hyped
for that fight and he couldn't
relax. How strong is he to stop a
guy with a body punch in the 11th
round' Joey brought his power down
to super middleweight from light
heavyweight and I feel Peter is a
blown up junior middleweight. He
lost to a welterweight (Alfonso
Gomez) and twice to (Sergio) Mora,
who's not a big middleweight. I
think Joey's sparring partners,
Smith and Hanshaw, are better guys
than Joey's fighting October 14.
"Peter has a house and money; Joey
doesn't even own a car. This kid is
hungry and ‘who-wants-it-the-most'
is going to be a factor in this
fight. Joey bench-presses 320-350
pounds. How many super middleweights
can do that' Joey has the size,
strength and power. Maybe not in the
early part of the fight, but as the
fight wears on and Joey gets on top
of him, Peter won't have anyplace to
run, slip or slide. That's when Joey
will knock him out."
The Tournament of Contenders, in
association with Classic
Entertainment & Sports, is promoting
"The Contender Special - Put Up or
Shut Up".
Two other world class super
middleweights fight in the eight
round co-feature, unbeaten super
middleweight Allan "Sweetness" Green
against 2000 Olympian Jerson Ravelo
in the eight-round co-feature. Green
(22-0, 15 KOs), fighting out of
Tulsa (KO), is the No. 1 contender
in the North American Boxing
Federation and NABO, as well as
rated No. 6 by the World Boxing
Organization and No. 18 by the WBC.
Ravelo (17-1, 12 KOs), of Newark
(NJ) by way of San Cristobal,
Dominican Republic, defeated former
world champion Jeff Lacy as an
amateur.
Also featured on this card will be
The Contender favorite Alfonso
Gomez, who defeated Manfredo is the
first bout of Season 1 The
Contender, against an opponent to be
determined. The Mexican-born Gomez
(15-3-2, 6 KOs), rated No. 8 by the
NABF, was scheduled to fight on the
Providence card last February, but
he fell out due to illness and is
very excited about fighting on this
show.
The fights will be televised on
ESPN2 from 10:30PM - 12:30 AM/ET. It
will be tape-delayed as the main
event will begin LIVE at 9:00 PM/ET
inside the Dunkin' Donut Center.
