Stick and Move - Random Mental Blurbs from the Weekend Fight Scene

September 18, 2006 - Joan Guzman is close to reaching his dreams: fighting the best in the World and giving the Dominican Republic a fistic idol.

His victory over Jorge Barrios should put him to the top of the list for a bout with Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, or Manny Pacquiao. Hopefully boxing politics will not get in the way of Guzman getting a crack at one of these top names in the next year.

Speaking of Guzman, his youthful manager Jose Nunez should be applauded for directing Guzman's career. Prior to Nunez entering the picture, it seemed Guzman's name was constantly in the press over the antics of his ex-maniacal manager. Nunez stays in the background and does what a manger should be doing, working hard and moving Guzman's career. Not to mention, with any luck, Nunez will have two world champions in his camp by the end of the year, as he also manages Vivian Harris. Jose Nunez, manager of the year?

Israel Vazquez is one tough son of a gun. The likeable fighter did well for himself when he captured the I.B.F. Super Bantamweight Championship verses Jose Luis Valbuena back in 2005, but the winning streak he has massed since then is quite impressive. Getting off of the canvas to beat Jhonny Gonzalez on Saturday night just tops it off. Congratulations Izzy!

What more can be said about Marco Antonio Barrera. If any fighter of this generation deserves to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame it is the skilled and classy Baby Faced Assassin. Get Manny in the ring Marco, if that cannot happen, give the aforementioned Dominican a shot and call it a career.

If you are one of the many who are crying, "Barrera's victory over Juarez was boring," get over it! A boxer's job is to win and that is what he did. If you want to see an all out guaranteed slobber knocker, go and rent a copy of bum fights. This is the sweet science not some rudimentary caveman battle sport. Then again, I respect John Ruiz, because he wins, or used to win.

I know our big boss man Michael Marley says we should support boxing pay per views because it puts money in the pockets of fighters, but the upcoming "Mexican Glory" pay per view should be renamed "Mexican Bore Me". John Manuel Marquez vs. Jimrex Jaca and Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Al Seeger. Sounds like a bad Boxing After Dark. I would not even pay $3.00 for it on a pirated web site.
