Calzaghe Losing
Credibility
When Joe Calzaghe
put on a virtuoso
performance this
past March against
Jeff Lacy, we in the
boxing establishment
were ready and
willing to pardon
him for his past
sins. Calzaghe still
has yet to repent
for his previous
unwillingness to
fight the best at
his weight-class and
to unify. Now after
brutally defeating
Jeff Lacy, Calzaghe
has gone back to his
sinning ways.
The boxing world
still wants to see
Calzaghe in with the
best fighters at
168, but Calzaghe
has decided to once
again follow the
Sven Ottke path to
being a champion.
Calzaghe sports a stellar
42-0 record and Kessler
isn’t far behind with a
studly 38-0 unblemished
career. Both men carry two
of the sanctioning bodies
straps around their waist
(rumor has it though that
the IBF will soon strip
Calzaghe of their trinket).
There isn’t another
contender in the division on
the level of either man,
hell Kessler just took the
WBC strap from longtime
champ Markus Beyer in a
stunning 3rd round KO during
their unification bout and
has proven that he is the
elite of the division right
there with Calzaghe. The
fight between Calzaghe and
Kessler is the division’s
only mega-fight on the
horizon and the winner could
be setup with another huge
fight when they could meet
Jermain Taylor when he moves
up in weight next summer.
Calzaghe says HBO wants him
to face an American, who the
flip cares, meet the best in
the division no matter where
their origin. Calzaghe was
supposedly offered 3.5
million euros to fight
Kessler in Denmark, I don’t
know the validity of this
report, but good money can
be made for Calzaghe if he
fights Kessler, and if he
wins, even more money will
be made down the road
because well he’ll be more
credible. Plus I guarantee
that a Calzaghe/Kessler
fight will get you up off
your ass and your eyes glued
on the combatants.
Superfighter Tournament
Failed Miserably
I never want to act like a
woman but this time I’ll
make an exception,
Superfighter coordinators, I
TOLD YOU SO!!! You simply
can’t deal with so many
different egos, schedules,
and injuries to be able to
coordinate something like
this tournament these days.
Also, fans want to see these
fighters in real meaningful
fights. Oh and what the hell
made them think that they
had “The Elite” fighters of
the heavyweight division? I
tell you what Superfighter,
get in with HBO, Showtime,
Arum, and King and organize
a Superfighter tournament of
champions with the four
titlist and four contenders
and mix them up to fight
over the span of nine to
twelve months. Then in all
reality you would have a
true Superfighter tournament
and subsequently a lot of
viewers and money, but until
then, leave boxing alone.
Mayweather Not Getting
Enough Respect
Yeah who knew that I would
give props to “Pretty Boy”?
Several “experts” are
proclaiming that Manny
Pacquiao is the best pound
for pound fighter in the
world today. To be honest I
still feel that he is number
two, but that Mayweather’s
victory over Carlos Baldomir
was a more significant
victory than Pacquiao’s
victory over Eric Morales.
Yes I said it and I meant
it. I know Baldomir doesn’t
have the legacy or record of
someone like Eric Morales,
but listen, Baldomir beat
two really good fighters at
welterweight and even though
Gatti can be considered past
his prime (so can Morales),
Baldomir was still streaking
and guys like Williams,
Cotto, and Margarito would
find a very difficult and
dangerous fight with
Baldomir, even now. As for
Morales, well Pac has a
victory over Morales already
and he stopped Morales in
that brawl. Morales is a
warrior who has seen too
many battles and has
developed that dangerous
“thousand-yard stare”. Yes
Pac did look impressive
against Morales and he is a
devastating fighter to go up
against, but Mayweather put
on a boxing clinic of how to
hit and not be hit and fans
have forgotten how to
appreciate a performance on
that level. I have been a
big critic of Mayweather and
his choice of opponents, so
I was ecstatic when he
signed to fight Baldomir.
Mayweather’s performance
over the welterweight king
should earn more respect
than it has. People are now
saying Baldomir is overrated
because of how bad
Mayweather beat him, so lets
flip it, maybe just maybe
Mayweather is so damn good
that he completely nullified
the attack of one of the
most dangerous fighters out
there and that he is truly
the best fighter currently
practicing pugilism,
Mayweather just doesn’t
possess the greatest heart.
I say let Pac fight Juan
Manuel Marquez and wait for
Mayweather to take on Oscar
De La Hoya and then we’ll
see how Pac and PBF rank.
